Teaching Philosophy

I love teaching my students to play the piano and create music! My goal for the students is that they develop a good technique to facilitate ease of playing, a strong and independent ability to read notes and rhythms, and an understanding of artistic concepts like tone and dynamics from the very beginning. I also wish for them to see the reward that comes from diligently pursuing a task on a daily basis through consistent practice. This is one of the benefits of music study that carries through a person’s whole life-the discipline of attacking a task in daily incremental steps carries through to any career, whether or not music remains a primary study. I never get tired of helping a student tackle something difficult and emerge from it a better musician and more confident person. I wish for music to remain an enriching part of their lives always in whatever capacity that may be.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need to have a piano at home? Yes, you will need an instrument at home to practice on. While we can accomplish a lot in a lesson, there is no substitute for the work that happens in daily practice at home. I have several suggestions for renting or buying an instrument and am happy to help you find one!
  • How much will I need to practice? Frequency of practicing is more important than duration, especially at the beginning. I recommend 20-30 min 5-6 days a week for beginners. Your practice sessions will grow longer as your music becomes more complicated.
  • What should I bring to my lesson? You should bring any music you are working on, a notebook, your folder/practice chart, and any theory assignments. You should also make sure your fingernails are trimmed short. Sadly, no manicures for pianists!
  • Will I have performance opportunities? Yes! For school-age students I organize an annual recital as well as semesterly studio classes. Additionally, many students participate in performance events and competitions offered throughout the year. These performances help students gain performance practice and confidence!
  • Can I still play learn to play the piano as an adult? Absolutely! You are never to old to learn to play the piano. Always wanted to learn and never did? Took piano lessons as a kid but quit or don’t remember? I hear both of these so often from adults! It’s not as hard as you might think.
